Can I set up my eSIM without an internet connection?

Last updated October 14, 2026

No. Setting up the eSIM requires an internet connection — Wi-Fi or your home cellular data both work. After setup, you don't need internet until you arrive in your destination.

Setup downloads the eSIM profile to your phone, and that download needs a connection. Once set up, the eSIM sits dormant — no internet, no data — until your phone connects to a network in your destination.

What counts as a connection for setup

  • Your home Wi-Fi (easiest).

  • Café or office Wi-Fi.

  • Your home SIM's cellular data.

  • Airport Wi-Fi (works but can be unreliable).

If you've already arrived and can't get online: use your home SIM briefly (a small profile costs pennies even roaming), find Wi-Fi, or borrow a hotspot. The lesson: set up before you fly and skip the airport problem entirely.
